How We Work

Each of us, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, TOT4TOT, and First Library, play our part in putting brand new, high quality, age-appropriate books into the hands of preschool children, newborn to age five, regardless of their family’s income and at no cost or financial obligation.

Dolly Parton launched the Imagination Library, a free book gifting program, in 1995 to foster a love of reading, an excitement about books, and the feeling of magic that books can create in preschool children. She also wanted to ensure that every child would have books, regardless of the family’s income.

TOT4TOT, a charitable fundraising service, raises funds to open new chapters of the Imagination Library by parents pledging funds according to their zip code to turn off their children’s tech for two hours beginning on Tuesdays.*

Plus, we raise funds for participating schools through our Pledge-a-Thons program.

First Library, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and the first and largest affiliate of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library in New Jersey, handles the registration and enrollment of local preschool children.

Along with the administration of the free book program they also engage parents in the process by requiring monthly library attendance.

Nonprofit status is also necessary for reduced

nonprofit mailing rates through the USPS for all book mailings.
